Ryan Schellenberg: watching Barry Shwartz - Loss of Wisdom.
Julie Lindsay: We are now watching Barry S
Ryan Schellenberg: what are people's favouite TED talks?
Ryan Schellenberg: Mine? Johnny Lee - Awesome Wiimote applications.
Julie Lindsay: Schwartz makes a passionate call for "practical wisdom" as an antidote to a society gone mad with bureaucracy. He argues powerfully that rules often fail us, incentives often backfire, and practical, everyday wisdom will help rebuild our world.
Rebecca: I like the tedtalks about fungi can cure so many things
Julie Lindsay: I like this one....relevant for our everyday lives and our bureacratic challenges
mikeboulanger from x.x.x.31 joined the chat 6 hours ago
Rebecca: schwartz reminds me to have loving kindness and compassion for students
Ryan Schellenberg: bureaucratic challenges? Who has bureaucratic challenges?
Rebecca: who doesn't?
Julie Lindsay: When and how to make the exception to every ruke
Rebecca: a wise person know s to make an exception to every rule and improvise
Julie Lindsay: rule i mean
SteveMadsen Oz: bureaucracy brings everthing to a halt or near halt, who needs changes?
Rebecca: a wise person is made not born
Lubna: "change is inevitable"
SteveMadsen Oz: change is as fast as a glacier
Ryan Schellenberg: yah, but is it embraced?
Lubna: I am not sure you can embrace change, its not really tangible.
Julie Lindsay: without wisdome brilliance is not enough
mikeboulanger: by some but many see no need to 'change' or grow
Julie Lindsay: change is never fast enough for me.......
mikeboulanger: but...
Ryan Schellenberg: agreed to both.
Alkhatib, Qatar from x.x.x.27 joined the chat 6 hours ago
Rebecca: @julie i agree
muna masadeh from x.x.x.5 joined the chat 6 hours ago
muna masadeh: hello every one
Lubna: @Julie...your right...but with people with wisdom as yourself and great visions that they want to see implemented..change will never be fast enough
Julie Lindsay: Hi Muna
Ryan Schellenberg: Hello Muna
Lubna: Alsalamo 3lakuim Muna
Julie Lindsay: @Lubna...well you know I am not very patient...but trying to be a wiser person as I get older...aren't we all?
Julie Lindsay: bonuses for empathy
Lubna: Yes...and in relation to the video...patience is a virtue
Julie Lindsay: ??
Rebecca: rules bring up the bottom group of ppl, but bring down the ppl that want to fly
Ryan Schellenberg: @rebecca interesting. havn't thought about that.
Julie Lindsay: rules ensure mediocraty
Julie Lindsay: jazz musicians do not need notes on a page....they do need empathy
Julie Lindsay: they do need s structure to work within that all participants understand
Rebecca: are marks the second reason?
Jill: Convo on favorite TEDx talks - I like David Merrill - siftables(smart blocks)
mikeboulanger: rules or 'policies' actually tend to imped innovation and creativity
Rebecca: hear hear @mike
Ryan Schellenberg: @jill, Heard about that one, havn't seen it yet. Cool technology though. MIT no?
mikeboulanger: especially externall implemented 'policy'
Jabiz: With rules, people are afraid to make mistakes and break them, so very few people act in any meaningful way.
mikeboulanger: who wants to get in trouble...naughty naughty
SteveMadsen Oz: more rules the better or fewer rules the better?
Rebecca: i am tired of getting in trouble
Lubna: rebels
Rebecca: heretics
Jill: Do you know the name of the one with the child who gave a moving speech "Don't give up on me!" ?
Julie Lindsay: profit factor....profible is not always right
mikeboulanger: how about the idea of flexibility
Julie Lindsay: do not teach more ethics course
Jabiz: creatiivty is born out of rebellion
Julie Lindsay: this equates with 'teachng' digital citizenship...?
mikeboulanger: go Jabiz!
Bev from x.x.x.1 joined the chat 6 hours ago
Jabiz: Who are your moral heros?
Alkhatib, Qatar: Good, u r right , Mooooooral z every thing
Ryan Schellenberg: so you need more rules and policy then? incite a revolution?
Julie Lindsay: @Jabiz creativity is born out of differentiation
Lubna: @ mike..aren't there limitations to everything including flexibity..
Rebecca: @Jabiz heros.... many of the ppl on tedtalks
Ryan Schellenberg: @rebecca. Agreed.
Rebecca: do you work with someone you consider a hero?
Julie Lindsay: The 'My Hero' project for students has grown larger over th years
murcha from x.x.x.152 joined the chat 6 hours ago
Ryan Schellenberg: @rebecca. there are people at my work who I would categorize as hero...
Rebecca: ... i would like to be considered a ordinary hero by my students...
mikeboulanger: Grade 2 looking at 'My Hero' for their current UOI
murcha: Hello everyone from Australia
Julie Lindsay: Hi Anne!
Jill: RESPECT!! Here Here
Rebecca: hey @murcha
Julie Lindsay: thanks for joining us
mikeboulanger: regular everyday heroes like those from Higgly town!
Julie Lindsay: need to respect learning.....do our students do that?
SteveMadsen Oz: hi Anne, glad you could make it.
Julie Lindsay: do adult do that?
Jill: Hi Steve
Julie Lindsay: Anne we are watching: Barry Schwartz on our loss of wisdom Schwartz makes a passionate call for "practical wisdom" as an antidote to a society gone mad with bureaucracy. He argues powerfully that rules often fail us, incentives often backfire, and practical, everyday wisdom will help rebuild our world.
murcha: Hello Steve, I am here until my eyes will not stay open
Ryan Schellenberg: I think you can recognise teachers as heros without respecting learning.
Rebecca: mashups... creative commons...
SteveMadsen Oz: respecting learning may come with experience, age & hence some wisdom
Ryan Schellenberg: we are chatting in small groups.
SteveMadsen Oz: the groups sound like fish in a fishtank
Julie Lindsay: talking about students and their lack of respect in the classroom for the process of lewarnin...as a generalisation
SteveMadsen Oz: teenage students or adult students?
murcha: Is that the lack of respect in regard to respect for teachers, classroom content or just learning in general?
murcha: The audio is much better then
Ryan Schellenberg: @murcha - just told the cameraman
murcha: Thanks @ryan Julie is reasonably clear but the rest are not audible on the livestreaming
SteveMadsen Oz: problem solving seems to be a trendy word, what did problem solving used to be called?
SteveMadsen Oz: project based learning?
Julie Lindsay: @Steve...hmmmm following rules maybe?
SteveMadsen Oz: certainly not what I was thinking
Alkhatib, Qatar from x.x.x.27 left the chat 6 hours ago
Julie Lindsay: @Steve...I meant following a set procedure to find an answer rather than thinking independently
Bev from x.x.x.1 left the chat 6 hours ago
Nerine from x.x.x.27 joined the chat 6 hours ago
SteveMadsen Oz: maybe I don't know what problem based learning is?
Ryan Schellenberg: we are moving on...(2 min)
Julie Lindsay: About to watch this
Julie Lindsay: Benjamin Zander on music and passion Benjamin Zander has two infectious passions: classical music, and helping us all realize our untapped love for it -- and by extension, our untapped love for all new possibilities, new experiences, new connections.

Lubna: Why is this kid practicing the same song for so many years?
Rebecca: one buttock poaying
Rebecca: playing
Ryan Schellenberg: One buttock playing....
Ryan Schellenberg: classic.
Jabiz: The music pushed me over! I love it.
Rebecca: How many teachers are one buttock teachers?
Ryan Schellenberg: clearly our chairs are too big.
Julie Lindsay: you can be melodically challenged
Rebecca: @julie, that's me
Ryan Schellenberg: (my wife says I am)
Jabiz: I am too, but that has never stopped me from trying to create music...
Julie Lindsay: Village in Bangladesh?
Julie Lindsay: different tonalities and rhythms
Jabiz: This guy is great!
Julie Lindsay: this reminds me of all the lecturs and sessions I attended as a music graduate and undergrad....I miss it!
Rebecca: he has the belief that everyone will appreciate music.... he has so much faith
Rebecca: do i have complete faith in my students about math?
Rebecca: can my students see my faith?
Ryan Schellenberg: I am not sure it is fair to compare maths to music.
Rebecca: how can we build a story around what we are teaching to help them appreciate it
Ryan Schellenberg: I mean, I can recognise beauty in a quadratic... but ti diesn't speak to me....
Rebecca: @ryan... i teach math
Bev from x.x.x.1 joined the chat 5 hours ago
Jabiz: Be a role model and exhibit your passion
Ryan Schellenberg: Sure... a violin is useless without a player... the presentaion is everything.
Alan Qatar: everyone can appreciate Math - the key is making that connection that is relevant and personal - as he does with the "thinking of someone who has passed away" analogy
muna masadeh from x.x.x.5 joined the chat 5 hours ago
Ryan Schellenberg: @rebecca, I assumed<grin>
Rebecca: its more than just making the connection... I can feel his passion
Alan Qatar: he also isn't bound by a strict curriuculum - he is free to deal with it as he wants to :)
Julie Lindsay: listening and understanding...and being moved by Chopin
Rebecca: he totally believes that he can move each audience member
Ryan Schellenberg: are you passionate about your teaching? kind of a cruel question... I remember having teachers who were... they can(and did) move mountains.
Jabiz: If you are not passionate why are you teaching?
Julie Lindsay: @Alan..well the curriculum is to learn about Chopin, but he is able to deliver it the way he wants
Jill: Shopping love it
Julie Lindsay: there is also a hidden curriculum of course
Ryan Schellenberg: @julie Really?
Rebecca: everybody loves __________ they just haven't found out about it yet
Rebecca: awaken possibilities in others
Jabiz: The ability to make other people powerful.
Julie Lindsay: @Ryan...yes, he just said it...to awaken possiblity in other people
Rebecca: are their eyes shining
Rebecca: ?
Rebecca: who are we being?
Rebecca: success = how many shining eyes are around bme
Rebecca: me
Jabiz: How many shinning eyes do I have around me?
Lubna: i@ Julie: Is hidden curriclum, also those aspects that the educator is attempting to implment in students not found in the written text?
Rebecca: every word could be our last with someone
Jabiz: A posibilty to love into
Jabiz: live into, or maybe it is love?
Ryan Schellenberg: Ted is a pretty amazing institution.

Ryan Schellenberg: Dr Dennis Roberts will be speaking shortly.

Rebecca: it was every word could be our last with someone... i guess it could be either
Julie Lindsay: Topic: Deeper Leadership
Ryan Schellenberg: is the audio clear?
Julie Lindsay: Most of us see leadership as a process of engaging with others to make a positive difference. One of the precursors to deep and authentic leadership is discovering purpose, or conviction, in one%u2019s life. The Deeper Leadership presentation is about how to discover and sustain conviction so that we can all be the transforming educational leaders we hope to be.
Rebecca: dr. denny roberts from qatar foundation - deeper leadership
droberts: wrote about the model in his book "Deeper Learning in Leadership" published in 2007
Rebecca: going to introduce a model that helps us understanding leadership
Rebecca: i wonder if it is leaders or managers
droberts: leaders
Julie Lindsay: face obstacles....hit walls :-)
droberts: actually, the process of leadership
Rebecca: read tribes by seth godin
Ryan Schellenberg: "leadership is seeking to make a diference"
Rebecca: http://www.amazon.com/Tribes-We-Need-You-Lead/dp/1591842336/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1244123359&sr=8-1
Julie Lindsay: @Ryan I like that idea
Bev from x.x.x.1 joined the chat 5 hours ago
Ryan Schellenberg: @julie - not mine<grin>
Rebecca: adaptive challenge?
Bev: Leadership is drawing people to you and not pushing ideas on people
Ryan Schellenberg: If you build it, they will come.
Rebecca: author he likes: heifetz, 1994 leadership without easy answers
Whodey from x.x.x.27 joined the chat 5 hours ago
Rebecca: find small leverage points
Rebecca: leadership = conviiction in action
Julie Lindsay: leadership is conviction in action (Dr Roberts)
Rebecca: be couragious enough to act on it
droberts: knowing what we care about and then having the courage to do something about it
Ryan Schellenberg: "where does conviction come from?"
Ryan Schellenberg: - How do these teachers do it over and over? can we fake it?
Rebecca: we can't afford the idea of faking it
Rebecca: model of discovering conviction
Rebecca: presence model
Julie Lindsay: book called Presence
Julie Lindsay: ilable
Julie Lindsay: available in Qatar
Ryan Schellenberg: @rebecca. agreed.
droberts: website on the model: http://www.presence.net/
Julie Lindsay: descibes model of leadership
Ryan Schellenberg: Zander is living his own truth and his own reality
muna masadeh from x.x.x.5 joined the chat 5 hours ago
Whodey: Robin and Jill, my computer crashed a month ago and I lost all bookmarks not on Delicious. What was that fantastic web 2.0 tools wiki page you founded?
Rebecca: the book http://www.amazon.com/Presence-Human-Purpose-Field-Future/dp/0385516304/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1244123791&sr=8-1
Julie Lindsay: internal leadership - opening
Julie Lindsay: external leadership....deeper compassion in work - creating
Rebecca: zander is not a chearleader.. real.. not play acting... what they say is what they really believe
Rebecca: AUTHENTICITY
Julie Lindsay: eg Obama - you may disagree with him but he is real..believes in what e says
Whodey: Looking at all of these fantastic videos of inspirational educators in the world, Sam, could we collect these for facilitating discussions in the advisory periods or PSE next year?
Julie Lindsay: a deeply convicted leader will LISTEN
Rebecca: you beat me to it julie
Julie Lindsay: Csikszentmihalyi ???
Rebecca: csikszentmihalyi ... flow
droberts: http://www.amazon.com/Flow-Psychology-Optimal-Experience-P-S/dp/0061339202/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1244124069&sr=1-1
Rebecca: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihaly_Csikszentmihalyi
Julie Lindsay: high skill and hiogh challenge = FLOW = magic
Rebecca: julie/
Rebecca: ?
Julie Lindsay: hmm....pacing..a good idea
Rebecca: learning how to oscillate
Jabiz: It's better to burn out than fade away...neil young
Julie Lindsay: I am looking forward to that day off...in July I think I get one :-)
Rebecca: flow%u2014 a state of concentration or complete absorption with the activity at hand and the situation. The idea of flow is identical to the feeling of being in the zone or in the groove. The flow state is an optimal state of intrinsic motivation, where the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing. This is a feeling everyone has at times, characterized by a feeling of great absorption, engagement, fulfillment, and skill%u2014and during which temporal concerns (time, food, ego-self, etc.) are typically ignored
droberts: Dr. Roberts' book: http://www.amazon.com/Deeper-Learning-Leadership-Students-Potential/dp/0787985856/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1244123844&sr=1-1
Jill: Deeper leadership requires presence, flow and oscillation - good advice

Jabiz: IS this a closed platform?
Bob Elliott from x.x.x.27 joined the chat 4 hours ago
Jabiz: Bob, is this like Nesa Blackboard?
Bob Elliott: i think so
Bob Elliott: maybe with the ability to mark directly in the portal?
Whodey from x.x.x.27 joined the chat 4 hours ago
Whodey: Here's an article on this implementation: http://www.english.education.gov.qa/content/general/detail/4209
Alan from x.x.x.27 joined the chat 4 hours ago
Bob Elliott: it looks like parents have access also
Bob Elliott: in Blackboard it is only for students
droberts: not necessarily... teachers have direct access to student work in blackboard and can leave coments, discussions, etc
Jabiz: So black board and poweschool mixed with a dash of Atlas
Lubna: perhaps admins can give the parents their children's usernames/password, and so they can have access as well
Bob Elliott: sorry, i meant that Blackboard is not really for parents
Lubna: yes, but it can be a means to access infor. about their students, like grades?
Alan: @Lubna - I would think each person (teacher / student / parent) would have customized access to they can see what they want to - parents would have their own access to check on their child's progress
Rebecca: i guess i'm wary of walled gardens http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walled_garden_(media)
Jabiz: Big question..how much does this costs$$$$
Lubna: @Alan..I am not too familiar with blackboard, except that I've used in uni as a student., but can guess the teacher role now.
Lubna: "money" is never an issua @ QA
Alan: RE: Video clip - I hope the kids can customize their own layout and interface - we all know students will invest more in it if they can personalize it. And that interface is ugly ;)
Julie Lindsay: @Alan yes, customization isone of the 8 NETGEN norms as identified by Don Tapscott in Grown up Digital
Rebecca: what's in the bag?
Ryan Schellenberg: @rebecca Sign up to speak and find out!

Rebecca: i am just more than a teacher - jabiz
Ryan Schellenberg: How many of us have asked that question recently - who am I really?
Rebecca: how can we help them if we are not activily learning how to do
Julie L Qatar: you cannot teach something you do not know how to do........
Rebecca: teaching is about relationships
Rebecca: trust openness honesty
Julie L Qatar: trust, openess and honesty - 3 most important ideas in the classroom
Alan: @Julie - You can facilitate students to learn things that, perhaps, you don't know how to do yourself :)
Rebecca: blogs w/o seearchengines!
Ryan Schellenberg: it'd be interesting if the stumbling was a part of the presentation... effective. vulnerable.
Lubna: real leader/adaptive?
Rebecca: @ryan he was comfortable w/ it...
Ryan Schellenberg: very.
Rebecca: we are all equal
Rebecca: we all can all learn from eachother no matter who they are
Julie L Qatar: I think Jabiz is talking about an extended classroom, collaborative, community based
Julie L Qatar: I like the way Jabiz refers to other talks and experiences we have all shared this afternoon
Rebecca: only those who willl risk going too far can possible ... he turned to quickly
